How MenfeX Is Installed
MenfeX does not change the established sequence for a cast-in-place box culvert. One step simply disappears: stripping.
Wall panels are erected by hand; the clear span is adjusted to the design.
The deck form seats onto the walls and closes the section.
Walls first, then the top slab. The formwork stays in place — nothing is stripped.
Excavation and subgrade
Excavate to formation level and verify the bearing capacity of the subgrade.
Blinding concrete
Place blinding concrete to obtain a level working surface.
Base slab reinforcement and pour
Place the base reinforcement to the structural design, maintain 50 mm cover and pour the slab.
Wall reinforcement
Fix the wall reinforcement.
MenfeX wall panel erection
MenfeX stepWall panels are carried and set by hand. The clear span is adjusted to the design dimension and the panels are tied together and to the base slab. No crane required.
Wall pour
MenfeX stepConcrete is placed in lifts and vibrated, observing the stated rate of placement and lift height limits.
Top slab form seating
MenfeX stepThe deck form seats onto the wall panels. Propping is installed beneath it where the span requires it.
Top slab reinforcement and pour
MenfeX stepFix the top slab reinforcement, then pour and compact the deck.
Curing
Apply a minimum of 7 days wet curing in hot weather.
Formwork stripping
Step eliminatedThis step does not exist with MenfeX. The formwork stays in place as the culvert's permanent inner surface.
Wing walls and headwalls
Form the wing walls at the inlet and outlet.
Outlet protection
Place rip-rap or a concrete energy dissipator at the outlet.
Backfill
Backfill and compact evenly on both sides simultaneously.
Capping and pavement
Place the capping layer and construct the pavement.
Pour blocks on long culverts
Where total length exceeds 12 m the culvert is cast in independent 6 m blocks; beyond 24 m an expansion joint is required between blocks. The modular panel layout matches this rhythm.
Site notes
- Observe the rate of placement and lift height limits — panels are designed to a defined lateral pressure.
- Do not hold the vibrator poker against a panel face for a prolonged period.
- Check joint tightness before pouring.
- Backfill both sides simultaneously.
FAQ
Will plastic formwork withstand the lateral pressure of fresh concrete?
Yes — provided the stated rate of placement and lift height limits are observed.
The lateral pressure fresh concrete exerts on formwork is not constant; it varies with pour rate, lift height, concrete temperature and consistency. This is the same physics for steel and plastic alike — every formwork system is designed to a defined pressure.
The design pressure, maximum rate of placement and maximum lift height for MenfeX panels are stated in the installation guide and on the panel label. Exceeding these limits can deform the panel — a rule that applies to every formwork system.
Will it withstand vibration?
Yes, with normal internal vibration practice.
Concrete is compacted with a vibrator as in any formwork system. The one precaution is not to hold the poker against a panel face for a prolonged period — a rule that applies to steel formwork for surface quality, and here for both surface and panel.
Recommended poker diameter and immersion spacing are given in the installation guide.
Does the top slab form need propping?
It depends on the clear span. Small spans may need none; larger spans do.
The deck form carries the weight of wet concrete plus construction loads, and that load rises quickly with span. Above a given span, propping is installed beneath the form. Prop spacing by span is tabulated in the technical documentation.
This is not specific to MenfeX — steel systems are propped too. The difference is that here what gets struck afterwards is the props, not the formwork.
How many people and how long does installation take?
No crane is required; panels are carried and erected by hand.
Crew size and installation time for a typical culvert are given in the product data sheet. No specialist trade is needed — the system is designed to be installed by any crew that can put up formwork.
